Nippon Steel has pledged $5,000 bonuses to union and non-represented workers under the senior management level if the deal goes through. The Japan-based steelmaker is offering $100 million in bonuses. Both union and nonunion members rallied at the U. S. Steel Mon Valley Works Clairton Plant near Pittsburgh for the deal. “Our employees and community members are rallying once again to show the unrelenting support for the transaction with Nippon Steel. This transaction strengthens U.S. national security, economic security, and job security, creating the best possibility for U. S. Steel to get better and bigger. This transaction with Nippon Steel is the only scenario where significant investments would occur across the unionized, integrated facilities, including in Mon Valley Works. We need to get the deal done,” U.S. Steel President and Chief Executive Officer David B. Burritt said. Listen now and subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | RSS Feed | SoundStack | All Of Our Podcasts Nippon Steel has pledged to invest $2.7 billion in U.S. Steel's mills, including $300 million to reline a blast furnace at Gary Works. “I walk the floor every day at the Clairton Plant, talking to many USW members and multi-generation steelworkers. We want a future that is strong and secure for us, for our families, and for the Mon Valley. We have learned about the partnership with Nippon Steel and met with Nippon Steel’s leaders and are confident that this transaction is the best way to achieve that. Their commitment to invest in our Mon Valley Works facilities is essential to supporting the next generation of steelmaking in Pennsylvania,” said Richard Tikey, USW-Represented Maintenance Technician, U. Steel is a mainstay of life in Western PA and an engine of prosperity for our people. Under the new partnership with Nippon Steel, U. S. Steel will gain new investments, new technology, and modernization that will keep production in the Mon Valley for generations to come. We need political leaders to join the local labor, business, and civic leaders who are embracing this opportunity and the prosperity it will bring," said David N. Taylor, President and CEO of Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association. Bloomberg News reported President Joe Biden is on the verge of blocking the deal, which has faced political opposition from both parties. The United Steelworkers union has opposed it on a number of grounds, including concerns it would lead to further decline of the American steel industry, that it would result in fewer tariffs to protect domestic production and that it would make negotiating less transparent, as Nippon Steel is not a publicly traded company in the United States that's required to have open financial books.

(Bloomberg) -- Daniel Chapo, Mozambique’s incoming president, plans national-reconciliation talks to resolve an escalating political crisis that has resulted in the deaths of dozens of people and stalled growth in the gas-rich nation. The Constitutional Council on Monday proclaimed Chapo the winner of the Oct. 9 election with 65% of the vote, triggering renewed unrest in parts of the southeast African nation. The 47-year-old lawyer and former provincial governor expects to be inaugurated on Jan. 15. “I am launching a national-reconciliation and dialogue initiative,” Chapo said in an interview hours after the top electoral court confirmed his landslide win. “That will bring together political leaders, civil society and communities to address grievances, foster understanding and build trust.” The intensifying turmoil has curtailed mining operations and threatens to further delay a $20 billion natural gas export plan that TotalEnergies SE is leading. It has disrupted flights, with tourists deterred by rioting that’s now spread to the port cities of Beira and Nacala. “There is significant ongoing unrest across Mozambique following the October elections and the confirmation of the results,” the UK government said in an advisory to travelers. Standard Bank Group Ltd.’s local unit expects an economic contraction this quarter and next, which would add pressure to already-strained state finances. Local broadcasters showed mobs attacking at least three bank branches near the capital, Maputo, and torching the ruling party’s office in a town north of the city. Neighboring South Africa called on all parties in Mozambique to commit to an “urgent dialogue” and stands ready to facilitate talks, the government in Pretoria said in a statement. Protesters overnight set fire to the offices of the governing Mozambique Liberation Front, known as Frelimo, in the town of Macia, about 110 kilometers (68 miles) north of Maputo. Demonstrators blocked various roads with burning tires, while footage shared on social media showed buildings — including government institutions and a bank branch — in flames. More Fatalities Local observer group Decide Platform said 16 had died since Monday evening. It earlier counted at least 130 fatalities since the protests began in late October, with most caused by police firing on the crowds. The most obvious route to restoring peace would be negotiating a truce with the fiery opposition presidential candidate, who has orchestrated the protests via live stream since fleeing the country of almost 35 million on Oct. 21. Venâncio Mondlane, who the top electoral court said got 24% of the vote, called the elections fraudulent and on Tuesday said the demonstrations wouldn’t stop. He is open to international mediation, he said in his latest update. Sign up for the twice-weekly Next Africa newsletter for the latest business and economic news from the continent. Chapo is not yet in power and will only initiate talks with other political leaders including Mondlane after the inauguration, the president-elect said. He hasn’t considered including the opposition in a unity government and would have to consult his party first, he added. Frelimo has been in power since independence 49 years ago. Mondlane said in a previous interview he would consider forming a national unity government, but wouldn’t accept any position himself under Frelimo’s rule. Local and international election observers raised concerns over vote rigging, including signs of ballot-box stuffing. While the Constitutional Council acknowledged irregularities, it said they woould not have changed the outcome. The US State Department called the process “flawed.” “We don’t have any elections without irregularities in the world,” Chapo said when asked if the outcome called into question his legitimacy to govern. Frelimo denied it rigged the vote. Besides the unrest, Chapo will take over a government struggling to pay its bills. He plans on restoring peace as a priority to getting the economy back on track. He also committed to policy and legal stability for companies operating large projects in the country, including natural gas, telling investors: “Don’t worry about it.” “Mozambique remains a land of immense opportunity,” said Chapo. “It is very important to maintain the contract situation with these companies, our law.” More From Chapo Interview: You can follow Bloomberg’s reporting on Africa on WhatsApp. Sign up here. --With assistance from Borges Nhamire and Ntando Thukwana. Veteran broadcaster Ray Hadley has struggled to hold back tears after hearing his late mother's voice during a highlights package of his career best on-air moments. The 2GB presenter appeared on fellow network stalwart Ben Fordham's breakfast program on Friday ahead of his final show as he retires fulltime from the radio. Fordham played 12-minutes of audio which paid tribute to Hadley's 43-year radio career from calling rugby league games, to the Olympics and hosting his own talkback show. But it was one very brief moment in the middle of the highlights package that touched the 70-year-old the most, leaving him in tears and struggling to find words. "My mother is on the line," Hadley says in the audio being played. "Hello, love. Congratulations. I'm the proudest mother in the world," Elsie Ross-Hadley can be hear saying during a phone conversation on air prior to her death in 2013. Afterwards, Hadley described being "very emotional". "Dear, oh dear. I've heard my mother's voice previously... I wasn't gonna get upset. You've done this to me you little bludger," the outgoing 2GB host said to Fordham. Listeners turning in heard the 70-year-old continue to be in tears. "I was alright until I heard mum. And then I heard my mum," Hadley said. "I’m sorry ladies and gentlemen. The thing that got me the most was mum." Elsewhere in the highlights package, the audience heard Hadley speak to high profile Aussies from state and federal politicians to CEOs of major corporations. His other passion in sport commentating was also featured with the calling of major rugby league games, such as the State of Origin, to covering several Olympic Games. Sky News Australia broadcasted his final minutes on air, with Hadley thanking his friends and hosts at the network in the likes of Laura Jayes and Peter Stefanovic. "I thanked all my staff, I think my family and I'll thank my wife Sophie for their loyal support over a long period of time," he said. "I'd like to think over a period of time I've done plenty of good, and I've probably done some harm as well but the harm is outweighed by the good." Hadley also implored his audience to welcome his successor Mark Levy who starts from next week as he played his outro "The Last Date" by US pianist Floyd Cramer. Asked earlier in the interview about his plans once he steps away from the microphone fulltime on Friday, Hadley said he will ease into retirement with the things he loves. He will play his regular golf on Monday with his buddies, but one hour earlier. The following day the 70-year-old will be at his butcher in Cherrybrook, in Sydney's north-west, to label hams with the owner who he is also friends with. As for his Christmas plans, Hadley will head to the New South Wales Central Coast with his former personal assistant wife Sophie and then later to the Gold Coast. It comes after the veteran broadcaster return to the top of the Sydney radio ratings on Thursday, with his morning show rising 2.5 points to 13.7 per cent of the audience. Hadley has won 161 of the last 162 surveys since 2004. The 70-year-old's return to number one on mornings came after he was shockingly knocked from the top spot by WSFM's Phil O'Neil in the GfK survey last month. "It is a fantastic way to finish my career and the year, and I was in a fairly, I guess, sombre mood when we were beaten, and then after I had time to think about it, I thought it was not a bad run, 20 years at number one, and we got beaten," Hadley said. The broadcaster said he is going out as a "winner".
The Indiana vs. Notre Dame matchup in the first round of the College Football Playoff is the most expensive ticket on StubHub, but it’s Tennessee vs. Ohio State that’s selling the fastest. StubHub spokesperson Adam Budelli said Monday that the game being hosted in Columbus, Ohio, on Dec. 21 has sold 34% more tickets than the game in South Bend, Indiana, on Dec. 20. “The expanded college football playoffs are seeing early high demand, especially as we see new teams enter the competition for the first time,” Budelli said. StubHub lists tickets for sale from official event organizers, but most of its offerings are from the resale market. Here’s the ticket marketplace’s average CFP first-round prices as of Monday evening: 1. Indiana at Notre Dame — $733 2. Clemson at Texas — $518 3. Tennessee at Ohio State — $413 4. AP college football: andNobody is more aware of what Nikola Jokic means to the Nuggets than head coach Michael Malone. Denver is one of the most dominant teams in the NBA when the Serbian superstar is on the court. However, they aren’t nearly as effective when he’s on the bench. So when the head coach was asked about the team’s plan without their center, Malone joked that he banks on divine intervention. In their narrow win over the Warriors, the Nuggets held a net rating of +23 with the three-time MVP on the court. However, whenever he took a break, Golden State began to claw their way back into the game. This has been a recurring occurrence and one that Denver needs to address immediately. When Malone was questioned about the team’s strategy without Jokic, he quipped, However, he did proceed to give a serious answer and said the rest of the team needs to step up when Jokic is taking a breather, Jamal Murray finished with only 12 points against the Warriors but had a net rating of +4. Russell Westbrook’s net rating was a disappointing -10, but his clutch defensive play in the closing moments secured the victory for Denver. However, Denver needs more from Jokic’s supporting cast. Malone doesn’t want Jokic to play heavy minutes on a nightly basis. However, he will do what’s necessary to get a win. That certainly turned out to be the case against the Warriors as the Serbian superstar played 40 minutes. The head coach claimed it was the need of the hour and he was their best bet to get the win, The reigning MVP finished with 38 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists, and helped his team secure the win. The Nuggets don’t even resemble a play-in team without Jokic, but his impeccable play makes them a legit contender. Jokic’s dominance this season The Serbian superstar is filling up the stat sheet but the advanced analytics capture the true impact of the MVP candidate. On the season, Jokic is averaging the highest point differential of his career at +31. This mark is within the 100th percentile, making it his fourth consecutive season among the NBA’s best in that department. According to Cleaning the Glass, the Nuggets’ expected points are +61 with Jokic on the court. Additionally, the team’s effective field goal percentage increased by 11.3% with the center running the show. There isn’t a player in the NBA who is as valuable as Jokic. However, the Nuggets are risking burning him out, and Malone knows the rest of the team, including him, needs to step up and help their talisman.
SAN ANTONIO — Colorado secured what it said was record insurance coverage for quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter as the star duo opted to complete their college careers in the Alamo Bowl rather than sit out and prepare for the NFL draft. Colorado would not disclose the amount of insurance coverage each received, citing privacy laws. Coach Deion Sanders and athletic director Rick George both said it was the largest in college football history. "We happen to have two players that are probably going to be the first two picks of the NFL draft," Sanders said Monday. "We all know who those two are and they have received, I think, the highest number of coverage that has ever been covered in college football. It far exceeds anyone that has ever played this game of college football." While college programs maintain insurance policies for their athletes in case of injury, Colorado increased disability coverage for its entire roster in the Alamo Bowl. Sanders, the coach of the No. 20 Buffaloes, ensured his QB son and two-way star Hunter received larger policies since both are expected to be among the top 10 selections in the upcoming NFL draft. "It was his idea we should get disability insurance for our athletes for this game to ensure that they played and if there was some kind of injury that they would be well taken care of," George said. "So, we worked together on that. We're excited about it. We think it's great that all our players are playing in the game. That's what all bowl games should be like." Colorado (9-3, No. 23 CFP) will face the 17th-ranked BYU Cougars (10-2, No. 17 CFP) in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday. While most teams are scrambling with starters opting out of bowl games this year to enter the transfer portal or NFL draft, the Buffaloes did not lose any player on their two-deep roster. "It's more than what I got (when he played at Kansas State)," Colorado linebackers coach Andre' Hart said. "They gave us a helmet and said pop this on your leg and get out there and play. For them to get that (increased insurance coverage), I just think it's beneficial. To talk about where the game is, where it's going and how leadership is taking care of the players, I thought that's excellent." Shedeur Sanders completed 337 of 454 passes for 3,926 yards and 35 touchdowns this season. Many scouting services have Sanders rated as the top quarterback in this year's draft. Hunter received the Heisman Trophy as a two-way standout at cornerback and wide receiver. He had 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns and as a cornerback had four interceptions, broke up 11 passes and limited the opposition to 22 receptions on 688 defensive snaps. "They've taken care of us, everybody," Colorado running back Micah Welch said. "It really means a lot to have every teammate up here. That's a big thing. What I like about Coach Prime, they're taking care of us." Get local news delivered to your inbox!FG Trade/E+ via Getty Images Torrid Holdings Inc. We have been talking about for a long time that a ceasefire must be established. We need to release all the prisoners and want humanitarian access in Gaza, he said. Asked whether the UN is in contact with Gaza peace negotiators, Haq said the UN has been in touch with all parties and is “trying to get more information” regarding the ceasefire efforts. US national security adviser Jake Sullivan also told American media on Wednesday local time that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed with US President Joe Biden to “take another step towards achieving a good ceasefire agreement.” Biden intends to start doing this by engaging his representatives with Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, as well as other regional players, Sullivan revealed, adding that “there have been ongoing and indirect contacts with Hamas through mediators in recent weeks.” He continued by saying that he cannot predict the exact timing of a ceasefire agreement but said the US will do its utmost to achieve the deal and release “the hostages”. Egyptian delegation travels to Tel Aviv to discuss ceasefire Meanwhile, a security-political delegation from Egypt headed to Tel Aviv to discuss the Gaza ceasefire with Zionist officials. IRNA on Thursday morning cited Palestinian media as saying that the delegation is scheduled to enter the occupied territories in the next few hours. Some media outlets reported that the Egyptian delegation's plans include the announcement of some proposals regarding the post-war phase in the Gaza Strip. The Egyptian proposal that will be shared with Israeli officials reportedly talks about an administration under the supervision of the Palestinian Authority once the war on Gaza ends. The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, has repeatedly said that it will not submit to the pressures to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza that does not meet the conditions of the Resistance. Hamas and other resistance groups are against the Zionist regime's plan to occupy 50 km of Gaza land under the pretext of creating the so-called “safe zones”. The resistance groups insist on the complete withdrawal of the Israeli forces from Gaza, the establishment of a complete ceasefire and the reconstruction of Gaza as a condition for the release of Israeli prisoners. 4399

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump used his image as a successful New York businessman to become a celebrity, a reality television star and eventually the president. Now he will get to revel in one of the most visible symbols of success in the city when he rings the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday as he's also named Time Magazine's Person of the Year. Trump is expected to be on Wall Street to mark the ceremonial start of the day's trading, according to four people with knowledge of his plans. He will also be announced Thursday as Time's 2024 Person of the Year , according to a person familiar with the selection. The people who confirmed the stock exchange appearance and Time award were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. It will be a notable moment of twin recognitions for Trump, a born-and-bred New Yorker who at times has treated the stock market as a measure of public approval and has long-prized signifiers of his success in New York's business world and his appearances on the covers of magazines — especially Time. Trump was named the magazine's Person of the Year in 2016, when he was first elected to the White House. He had already been listed as a finalist for this year's award alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, X owner Elon Musk, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kate, the Princess of Wales. Time declined to confirm the selection ahead of Thursday morning's announcement. “Time does not comment on its annual choice for Person of the Year prior to publication,” a spokesperson for the magazine said Wednesday. The ringing of the bell is a powerful symbol of U.S. capitalism — and a good New York photo opportunity at that. Despite his decades as a New York businessman, Trump has never done it before. It was unclear whether Trump, a Republican, would meet with New York's embattled mayor, Democrat Eric Adams , who has warmed to Trump and has not ruled out changing his political party. Adams has been charged with federal corruption crimes and accused of selling influence to foreign nationals; he has denied wrongdoing. Trump himself was once a symbol of New York, but he gave up living full-time in his namesake Trump Tower in Manhattan and moved to Florida after leaving the White House. CNN first reported Wednesday Trump’s visit to the stock exchange and Politico reported that Trump was expected to be unveiled as Time's Person of the Year. The stock exchange regularly invites celebrities and business leaders to participate in the ceremonial opening and closing of trading. During Trump’s first term, his wife, Melania Trump, rang the bell to promote her “Be Best” initiative on children’s well-being. Last year, Time CEO Jessica Sibley rang the opening bell to unveil the magazine's 2023 Person of the Year: Taylor Swift . After the Nov. 5 election, the S&P 500 rallied 2.5% for its best day in nearly two years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1,508 points, or 3.6%, while the Nasdaq composite jumped 3%. All three indexes topped records they had set in recent weeks. The U.S. stock market has historically tended to rise regardless of which party wins the White House, with Democrats scoring bigger average gains since 1945. But Republican control could mean big shifts in the winning and losing industries underneath the surface, and investors are adding to bets built earlier on what the higher tariffs, lower tax rates and lighter regulation that Trump favors will mean. Trump has long courted the business community based on his own status as a wealthy real estate developer who gained additional fame as the star of the TV show “The Apprentice” in which competitors tried to impress him with their business skills. He won the election in part by tapping into Americans' deep anxieties about an economy that seemed unable to meet the needs of the middle class. The larger business community has applauded his promises to reduce corporate taxes and cut regulations. But there are also concerns about his stated plans to impose broad tariffs and possibly target companies that he sees as not aligning with his own political interests. Trump spends the bulk of his time at his Florida home but was in New York for weeks this spring during his hush money trial there. He was convicted, but his lawyers are pushing for the case to be thrown out in light of his election. While he spent hours in a Manhattan courthouse every day during his criminal trial, Trump took his presidential campaign to the streets of the heavily Democratic city, holding a rally in the Bronx and popping up at settings for working-class New Yorkers: a bodega, a construction site and a firehouse. Trump returned to the city in September to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at his Manhattan tower and again in the final stretch of the presidential campaign when he held a rally at Madison Square Garden that drew immediate blowback as speakers made rude and racist insults and incendiary remarks . At the stock exchange, the ringing of the bell has been a tradition since the 1800s. The first guest to do it was a 10-year-old boy named Leonard Ross, in 1956, who won a quiz show answering questions about the stock market. Many times, companies listing on the exchange would ring the bell at 9:30 a.m. to commemorate their initial offerings as trading began. But the appearances have become an important marker of culture and politics -- something that Trump hopes to seize as he’s promised historic levels of economic growth. The anti-apartheid advocate and South African President Nelson Mandela rang the bell, as has Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone with his castmates from the film “The Expendables.” So, too, have the actors Robert Downey Jr. and Jeremy Renner for an “Avengers” movie and the Olympians Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin. In 1985, Ronald Reagan became the first sitting U.S. president to ring the bell. “With tax reform and budget control, our economy will be free to expand to its full potential, driving the bears back into permanent hibernation,” Reagan said at the time. “We’re going to turn the bull loose.” The crowd of traders on the floor chanted, “Ronnie! Ronnie! Ronnie!” The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed in 1985 and 1986, but it suffered a decline in October 1987 in an event known as “Black Monday.” Long reported from Washington. ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons are back in first place in the NFC South and again in control of their playoff hopes. Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. showed the poise in his first NFL start the Falcons will need to take advantage of their opportunity to end a six-year playoff drought. Powered by a big-play defense that produced two pick-6s, a solid starting debut by Penix and two rushing touchdowns by Bijan Robinson, the Falcons cruised past the hapless New York Giants 34-7 on Sunday. On Sunday night, the Falcons (8-7) received the assist they needed when Tampa Bay lost at Dallas . Because the Falcons swept the Buccaneers, they hold the tiebreaker advantage if they remain tied atop the division. The Falcons have games remaining at Washington on Sunday night and at home against Carolina to close the regular season. If Atlanta wins both games, it would win the division and have a home playoff game. The Falcons are assured of their best record since a 10-6 finish under coach Dan Quinn in 2017, their most recent playoff season. Quinn is in his first season as Washington's coach and has led the Commanders (10-5) to three straight wins, including Sunday's 36-33 victory over Philadelphia. Penix, the No. 8 overall pick in this year's NFL draft, was promoted after coach Raheem Morris benched Kirk Cousins. Penix completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards with one interception on a pass that should have been caught by tight end Kyle Pitts. Penix is not a dual-threat quarterback, but he showed the ability to escape pressure in the pocket that Cousins lacks following his 2023 Achilles tendon injury. The left-hander's superior arm strength also was immediately obvious. What’s working Robinson's production provided a safety net for the offense which helped make for a smooth transition to Penix. Robinson had scoring runs of 2 and 4 yards. Robinson has rushed for 10 touchdowns this season. He's the first Atlanta player with 10 more more rushing touchdowns since Devonta Freeman during the 2016 Super Bowl season. Robinson ran for 94 yards on 22 carries and had 103 yards from scrimmage. His 11th game this season with at least 100 yards from scrimmage are the most for the Falcons since Warrick Dunn's 11 in 2005. Morris said Robinson deserves to be considered with Philadelphia's Saquon Barkley in discussions regarding the league's top running backs. “Bijan has been outstanding all year in the things that he’s able to do," Morris said. “He’s special. If it wasn’t for this other guy out in Philly, he’d get a lot more recognition across the league. But that guy is having a special year, and Bijan’s not far behind him.” What needs help With kicker Younghoe Koo on injured reserve and watching from the sideline, Riley Patterson was wide left on his first field-goal attempt from 43 yards. Patterson rebounded to make attempts from 52 and 37 yards. Stock up Jessie Bates III and Matthew Judon each had a pick-6 to highlight a day of big plays for the defense. Arnold Ebiketie had his fifth sack of the season and added a fumble recovery. Kaden Ellis added a strip-sack. He also has five sacks this season, including sacks in four consecutive games. It is the longest streak for Atlanta since Patrick Kerney had sacks in five straight games in 2001. Stock down There was some thought that a change at quarterback could be good news for Pitts, who often seemed to be missing in action with Cousins running the offense. After all, a tight end often is a natural target for quick passes from a rookie making his first start. Instead, Pitts had a poor start to the Penix era when he bobbled his first pass from the left-hander, creating an interception by cornerback Cor’Dale Flott. Pitts caught a 7-yard pass on his only other target. For the season, Pitts has 41 catches for 543 yards and three touchdowns. Injuries There will be much interest in this week's injury report after WR Drake London (hamstring) was hurt in the second half. Morris provided an optimistic postgame outlook on London. CB Antonio Hamilton (quad) did not return after leaving the game in the first half. Key number 8: Bates has four interceptions and four forced fumbles. His combined eight forced turnovers lead the NFL. Next steps The game against Jayden Daniels and the Commanders is a reminder Penix was only the fourth of six quarterbacks selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Daniels, from LSU, was the No. 2 overall pick behind Caleb Williams by Chicago. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Charles Odum, The Associated PressHED changes procedure of principals' hiring
Steelers Fans All Saying The Same Thing About TurnoversSir Keir Starmer has been warned by a trade union not to impose “blunt headcount targets” for the size of the Civil Service but Government sources insisted there would be no set limit, although the number “cannot keep growing”. Departments have been ordered to find 5% “efficiency savings” as part of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ spending review, potentially putting jobs at risk. The size of the Civil Service has increased from a low of around 384,000 in mid-2016, and the Tories went into the general election promising to reduce numbers by 70,000 to fund extra defence spending. Any reduction under Labour would be more modest, with the Guardian reporting more than 10,000 jobs could be lost. A Government spokesman said: “Under our plan for change, we are making sure every part of government is delivering on working people’s priorities — delivering growth, putting more money in people’s pockets, getting the NHS back on its feet, rebuilding Britain and securing our borders in a decade of national renewal. “We are committed to making the Civil Service more efficient and effective, with bold measures to improve skills and harness new technologies.” Mike Clancy, general secretary of the Prospect trade union said: “We need a clear plan for the future of the civil service that goes beyond the blunt headcount targets that have failed in the past. “This plan needs to be developed in partnership with civil servants and their unions, and we look forward to deeper engagement with the government in the coming months.” A Government source said: “The number of civil servants cannot keep growing. “But we will not set an arbitrary cap. “The last government tried that and ended up spending loads on more expensive consultants.” The Government is already risking a confrontation with unions over proposals to limit pay rises for more than a million public servants to 2.8%, a figure only just over the projected 2.6% rate of inflation next year. Unions representing teachers, doctors and nurses have condemned the proposals. In the face of the union backlash, Downing Street said the public sector must improve productivity to justify real-terms pay increases. The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “It’s vital that pay awards are fair for both taxpayers and workers.” Asked whether higher pay settlements to staff would mean departmental cuts elsewhere, the spokesman said: “Real-terms pay increases must be matched by productivity gains and departments will only be able to fund pay awards above inflation over the medium-term if they become more productive and workforces become more productive.” TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “It’s hard to see how you address the crisis in our services without meaningful pay rises. “And it’s hard to see how services cut to the bone by 14 years of Tory government will find significant cash savings. “The Government must now engage unions and the millions of public sector workers we represent in a serious conversation about public service reform and delivery.”Biden calls Bashar Assad's fall in Syria a 'fundamental act of justice' — but warns of 'moment of risk'
THOUSANDS of patients were waiting for routine treatment last month at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare Foundation Trust in October, new figures have revealed. It comes as Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting warned there is still "a long way to go", despite waiting lists across England starting to fall. NHS England figures show 3,838 patients were waiting for non-urgent elective operations or treatment at the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust at the end of October – up from 3,420 in September. Of those, one had been waiting for longer than a year. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare launched on October 1 when Southern Health, Solent and some services from Isle of Wight and Sussex Partnership merged to form the new NHS trust. The median waiting time from referral to treatment at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare Trust was five weeks at the end of October – down from seven weeks in September. Nationally, 6.3 million people were waiting to start treatment at the end of October – in line with the end of September. Tim Gardner, assistant director of policy at think tank the Health Foundation, said the figures show the substantial challenge the Government faces. He said: "Whilst promising progress has been made in recent months, the 18-week target hasn’t been met for nearly a decade. "With the NHS facing the prospect of a very difficult winter, making further headway over the next few months will be very tough." Mr Gardner added once the winter is over the Government should focus on addressing inequalities in health across the country. Separate figures show 1.6 million patients in England were waiting for a key diagnostic test in October – the same as in September. At Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare Trust, 2,367 patients were waiting for one of nine standard tests, such as an MRI scan, non-obstetric ultrasound or gastroscopy at this time. Of them, 80 (3 per cent) had been waiting for at least six weeks. Other figures show cancer patients across England are not being seen quickly enough. The NHS states 85 per cent of cancer patients with an urgent referral should start treatment within 62 days. But NHS England data shows just 67.3 per cent of cancer patients urgently referred nationally began treatment within two months of their referral. That was down from 69.2 per cent in August. Danielle Jefferies, senior analyst at The King’s Fund, said the NHS is facing "a long list of priorities" across services, including reaching the 18-week waiting times target. She added the way the NHS's performance is assessed should be reviewed to include a wider range of services and prompt reform. Ms Jefferies said: "Winter pressures impact on all parts of the NHS and social care. "How the health service is faring cannot just be measured by what is happening in hospitals — a true assessment must look at the care patients need from community and primary care services. "Many people are struggling to access GP appointments and unable to get the support with social care services they need. "There should be a more wide-ranging review of performance targets to shine a spotlight on these services and incentivise much-needed reform of the health service." Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting said: "Since the general election, we have been ramping up to delivering the extra two million appointments a year, ending the strikes and investing more in the health service. "As a result, the NHS today is delivering a record number of treatments and waiting lists have begun to fall. "There’s a long way to go, but through our plan for change we will get patients seen on time again." The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust did not reply when approached for comment.

Global Gen Z Views on Beijing: A Journey Through the City's Culture, Innovation, and EcologyOn Tuesday, Dec. 10, The Business Journal hosted its 11th annual Best of Central Valley Business Awards dinner. Some of the Valley’s biggest names in business were in attendance at Pardini’s Catering to celebrate their achievements and be featured as one of the Valley’s top honorees, voted on by readers of The Business Journal. Today, The Business Journal highlights the nine first-time Best of Central Valley Business Award recipients. Congratulations to all winners. Granville Homes was voted Best Homebuilder for the 12the time this year, as well as the Best Business Supporting Local Charities. Founded in 1977, Granville has built more than 7,500 homes in the Central Valley. Granville Homes is very active in philanthropy, supporting organizations including Hinds Hospice, Poverello House and the Marjaree Mason Center. Each year, Granville supports dozens of nonprofit and community organizations. The Granville Home of Hope is the company’s biggest annual fundraiser. It raffles off a brand new home awarded to the winner as a grand prize. Granville CEO Darius Assemi said he is proud and grateful for the opportunity to support nine local nonprofits through Granville Home of Hope. He is also grateful for people who took the time to vote for The Business Journal’s “Best of” awards. “I’m grateful to our community that trusts Granville Homes and have supported our nominations for the ‘Best Homebuilder’ and ‘Best Business Supporting Local Charities.’” According to Granville Homes’ website, more than $9 million has been raised through the Granville Home of Hope program alone. The 2024 nonprofit beneficiaries are Angels of Grace, Breaking the Chains, CASA of Fresno & Madera Counties, Central California Food Bank, Foundation for Sanger Schools, Fresno Police & Fire Chaplaincy, Fresno Mission, Mell’s Mutts and Parents & Addicts in Need (PAIN). 1st Finalist: Fortune Associates 2nd Finalist: Russell G. Smith Inc. For the fourth time, Colliers International has been voted as the best commercial real estate company in the Central Valley. All four wins have been in the last six years. Colliers won three straight “Best Of” awards from 2019-21. Colliers was founded in 1968 as Charles Tingley Associates in Fresno. Since then, the Central California branch of Colliers International has become a leading commercial real estate firm, serving the San Joaquin Valley, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara counties. In addition to marketing properties from office, industrial, retail, land, investment to multifamily, Colliers is also a key source of data and information about the Central Valley commercial real estate market. Colliers is heavily involved in local charities. They helped provide 525,000 meals as part of the Central Valley Community Food Bank’s Hunger Heroes campaign. They’ve also partnered with Catholic Charities for their Turkey Drive. 1st Finalist: Commonwealth Lang Title Insurance 2nd Finalist: Fidelity National Title Co. This year marks the sixth time that Business Journal readers voted Chicago Title Co. as Best Title Company. The last time it won the award was in 2021. The company gained national recognition after the Great Chicago Fire of 1891 and has established its presence in the Central Valley for nearly 100 years, marking a deep history in the region. Jennifer Shepherd, vice president and sales manager at Chicago Title Co. Fresno/Madera, said it’s nice to be consistently recognized for its work in the community and meeting the standards they set for themselves of providing excellent service. Work was steady this year, Shepherd said, but there was some disruption on the home resale side with concerns about real estate agent commissions. On the refinance side, Shepherd said the team is poised for a rate cut to unlock potential clients. Shepherd said the team is excited for the growth seen in several of their offices, including the Clovis office that opened in 2023, which really blossomed. There are 10 Chicago Title Co. locations throughout the Central Valley between Fresno, and the Tulare/Kings County areas. In all locations in the Central Valley, Chicago Title Co. has more than 100 employees. “It was good that business has been steady, that we’ve been able to maintain and even grow some of their operations and we are looking forward to 2025 being a good year as well,” Shepherd said. Winning the Best Of award again is considered a benchmark by the Chicago Title Co. team, she said. 1st Finalist: Granville Realty 2nd Finalist: Dana Butcher and Associates For the ninth time in 11 years, Manco Abbott was voted as the best real estate property company. This is Manco Abbott’s third straight win in this category. In 2022, Manco Abbott celebrated 50 years of business. Greg Bethke, executive vice president at Manco Abbott, described the nomination for this award as validating. “It kind of validates our core values, that what we are setting out to do with the core values of our company are working,” Bethke said. “This means that our clients, our tenants and our residents on the multi-family side appreciate what we’re doing, and we’re delivering a good product to them.” Bethke, who has been at Manco Abbott for 23 years, said his favorite part of working there are the people. “Everybody here is passionate about what we do, and they all do a really good job of working towards our ultimate goals of creating value for our clients and creating a good environment for our commercial tenants and multi-family residents,” Bethke said. While 2024 is ending with an award, Bethke is excited for what’s next in 2025. “We’re always looking to improve on what we do,” Bethke said. “So we’re looking at technology, we’re looking at additional training for our people, and, you know, looking at anything and everything we can do to make our service stand out for our clients and our tenants.” 1st Finalist: PAul Halajian Architects 2nd Finalist: Teter Business Journal readers have voted for Darden Architects as the Best Architectural Firm for the ninth time. Founded By Edwin S. Darden in 1959, the firm’s early works supported the growing communities of the California San Joaquin Valley with their high-quality design and a strong commitment to customer service. The firm specializes in projects in education, health care, interior design and the civic sector. Some of Darden’s notable projects include Madera Community College, the emergency helipad at the Kaweah Health Medical Center in Visalia and the Visalia Emergency Communications Center. Darden is currently in its fourth generation of firm leadership with Robert L. Petithomme serving as managing principal. Today, the company utilizes new design technology to create 3-D visualizations and create more complete, concise, well-coordinated documents. Darden also gives back to the community, offering a $1,000 architecture scholarship to a San Joaquin Valley student since 2007 in hopes they will graduate and return to the area and strengthen the architectural profession. 1st Finalist: Provost & Pritchard Consulting Group 2nd Finalist: Blair, Church & Flynn Business Journal readers voted Precision Civil Engineering the best engineering firm in the Central Valley in 2024. This is the company’s second time winning the category within the last three years. The nomination “Solidifies the recognition of our collective skill-sets and commitment to the success of the Valley,” Makenna Bass, director of business development said in an email. Founder and President Ed Dunkel, Jr. is a fifth-generation Fresnan from a family with nearly 60 years of experience in engineering services. After getting its start in 2002, Precision Civil Engineering has grown and diversified from its roots in residential land development to now include planning, land surveying, construction management and more. As of 2024, the team at Precision has partnered with at least 1,453 clients and worked on more than 3,600 projects. According to Bass, Precision sets itself apart from its competitors in its “genuine affection for the communities we serve.” As the year ends and the company looks to the future, the goals are growing its footprint into the South Valley and eventual expansion outside of California. 1st Finalist: Cal Valley Insurance Services 2nd Finalist: Der Manouel Insurance Group Being nominated for the 11th consecutive year as the Best Property & Casualty Insurance Brokerage in the Best of Central Valley Business Awards is an incredible honor for everyone at DiBuduo & DeFendis Insurance Brokers (D&D). “As a family-owned business rooted in the heart of the Central Valley for 64 years, this recognition means so much to us because it reflects the trust and confidence our clients and community have in the work we do every day,” said Principal Mike DeFendis For over six decades, D&D has been committed to serving clients with integrity, dedication, and personalized care in the insurance industry. ANNAPOLIS , Md. — Kaylene Smikle scored 16 points and made a couple key baskets down the stretch to help No. 10 Maryland hold off George Mason 66-56 in a matchup of unbeatens Saturday at the Navy Classic. The Terrapins (7-0) led by just two when Smikle stole the ball and made a layup while being fouled. The free throw pushed the lead to 58-53. Then a putback by Smikle put Maryland up by seven. The Terps won despite shooting 13 of 26 on free throws. George Mason (6-1) trailed by 10 at halftime before outscoring Maryland 18-7 in the third quarter. The Patriots' final lead was 49-48 in the fourth after a jumper by Kennedy Harris. Harris led George Mason with 26 points. Maryland is off to its best start since winning its first 12 games in 2018-19. George Mason: The Patriots have lost all nine meetings with Maryland, but it's been more competitive of late. The Terps won 86-77 last year, and this game was more competitive than the final score suggested. Maryland: After a down season by their standards, the Terps are off to a nice start, but the free-throw problems in this game nearly cost them. With the score 55-53, George Mason had a chance to tie, but the Patriots never really recovered after Smikle swiped the ball from Harris and went the other way for a three-point play with 3:08 remaining. Although Maryland was awful at the line, at least the Terps got there. George Mason was only 3 of 8 from the stripe, and the Terps held the Patriots to 32% shooting from the field. Mid-American Conference football goes all in on November weeknights for the TV viewersDenton's Walmart on South Loop 288 is piloting a new program that equips some employees with body-worn cameras in an effort to mitigate theft and customer conflict. The Denton Record-Chronicle visited both Denton Walmart stores, located at 1515 S. Loop 288 and 2750 W. University Drive, on Thursday. A small number of employees were wearing the body cameras at the South Loop 288 store. The employees wearing the devices were located at the self check out stations and were greeters, who occasionally check customer receipts. Other employees throughout the Loop 288 store's floor were not wearing body cameras at the time. A sign at the store's entrances informs customers that there is video and audio recording at the store and that body-worn cameras are in use. There were not any employees seen wearing body cameras at the University Drive store on Thursday. Though the stores have in-house asset protection and contracts with the Denton Police Department to provide off-duty officer security, Walmart confirmed it’s looking for additional security measures. “While we don’t talk about the specifics of our security measures, we are always looking at new and innovating technology used across the retail industry,” Walmart said in a statement to USA Today. “This is a pilot we are testing in one market and we will evaluate the result before making any longer-term decisions.” An employee at a unspecified Walmart store posted a photo on Reddit of the devices in a charging station. A poster directs employees to wear the cameras at chest level and activate them if an interaction with a customer is escalating. It tells employees not to wear the cameras in associate spaces or bathrooms. The Denton Walmart stores have long since been hot spots for shoplifting, assault and other criminal behavior. For example, during the week of Thanksgiving, Denton police arrested a man on an aggravated assault charge for allegedly barricading himself in the Walmart on University Drive and shooting arrows at employees and customers. No one was injured in that incident. However, multiple Walmart employees from both Denton stores have reported within the past year that they have been pushed, kicked and hit when confronting customers who are suspected of shoplifting, generally causing a disturbance or victimizing other customers. A 20-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kicking a Walmart security guard, according to a Denton police report. A 24-year-old man was arrested Sunday after he robbed another man, who he said scammed him, at knifepoint at Walmart, according to a police report. Other retailers, like TJX , which owns T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods and Marshalls, also equipped employees with body-worn cameras earlier this year. “It’s almost like a de-escalation where people are less likely to do something when they’re being videotaped,” said TJX Chief Financial Officer John Klinger, according to CNN . Back on Reddit, reactions from commenters who worked at various Walmart stores were mixed with some feeling the devices were a necessary improvement in employee safety and others worrying that turning on a camera may further escalate a confrontation. The NFL's security division is warning players to be aware of professional burglars targeting the homes of pro athletes. The Athletic reported Thursday that the NFL sent a memo to teams that outlines the threat. "The homes of professional athletes across multiple sports leagues have become increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups," read the memo, which was obtained by The Athletic. "Law enforcement officials have noted these groups appear to exploit team schedules to target athletes' homes on game days." NBC News reported Wednesday that law enforcement is working to figure out whether an international crime syndicate is involved. The Athletic reported that the memo includes tips for home security and also gives recommendations about the use of social media, such as not posting photos of items that would attract thieves. Players also learned via the memo how homes are targeted and how burglars enter. Mahomes hasn't said much about the burglary, other than to call it "disappointing" and "frustrating." "I can't get into too many of the details because the investigation is still ongoing," he said. "But obviously something that you don't want to happen to really anybody, but obviously yourself." It's not clear what was stolen from Mahomes' home in Belton, Mo., during the Oct. 6 incident. But Kelce apparently lost $20,000 in cash in the burglary at his home in Leawood, Kan., the following day when the Chiefs played the New Orleans Saints on "Monday Night Football," according to a police report. The burglary at the home of Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis in River Hills, Wis., occurred Nov. 2 during the Bucks' home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He said the perpetrators "took most of my prized possessions" and is offering a reward for the return of his property. "Any info that leads to the return of any of my belongings will be rewarded handsomely," Portis said. "Let me know, thank you." --Field Level Media
Amazon has announced an additional $4 billion investment in Anthropic, the maker of Claude AI, bringing its total funding to $8 billion. This follows prior investments of $1.25 billion in September and $2.75 billion in March, showcasing Amazon's commitment to advancing AI. Amazon disclosed that its cloud platform, Amazon Web Services (AWS), will serve as Anthropic's primary training partner, in its blog post. Anthropic plans to leverage AWS's Trainium and Inferentia chips for developing future AI models. This partnership highlights Amazon's strategic efforts to strengthen its position in the Artificial Intelligence space while competing with leaders like OpenAI and Microsoft. Claude AI will power Amazon's upcoming Alexa revamp, slated for a 2025 release. Reports suggest that Claude's performance outshines Amazon's in-house Artificial Intelligence models, specifically in terms of delivering a conversational and interactive user experience. However, beta testing revealed that the current version of the upgraded Alexa still struggles with responsiveness and basic tasks, like turning on lights. Amazon's intensified focus on AI reflects its goal to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. With the improved Alexa and deeper collaboration with Anthropic, Amazon aims to deliver a smarter, more capable virtual assistant for its users.Indy Autonomous Challenge Returns to CES 2025: Showcasing the Future of Physical AI with Multicar Racing and Groundbreaking Collaborations

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — 2024 was a brutal year for the Amazon rainforest, with rampant wildfires and extreme drought ravaging large parts of a biome that’s a critical counterweight to climate change. A warming climate fed drought that in turn fed the worst year for fires since 2005. And those fires contributed to deforestation, with authorities suspecting some fires were set to more easily clear land to run cattle. The Amazon is twice the size of India and sprawls across eight countries and one territory, storing vast amounts of carbon dioxide that would otherwise warm the planet. It has about 20% of the world’s fresh water and astounding biodiversity, including 16,000 known tree species. But governments have historically viewed it as an area to be exploited, with little regard for sustainability or the rights of its Indigenous peoples, and experts say exploitation by individuals and organized crime is rising at alarming rates. “The fires and drought experienced in 2024 across the Amazon rainforest could be ominous indicators that we are reaching the long-feared ecological tipping point,” said Andrew Miller, advocacy director at Amazon Watch, an organization that works to protect the rainforest. “Humanity’s window of opportunity to reverse this trend is shrinking, but still open.” There were some bright spots. The level of Amazonian forest loss fell in both Brazil and Colombia. And nations gathered for the annual United Nations conference on biodiversity agreed to give Indigenous peoples more say in nature conservation decisions. “If the Amazon rainforest is to avoid the tipping point, Indigenous people will have been a determinant factor," Miller said. Wildfires and extreme drought Forest loss in Brazil’s Amazon — home to the largest swath of this rainforest — dropped 30.6% compared to the previous year, the lowest level of destruction in nine years. The improvement under leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva contrasted with deforestation that hit a 15-year high under Lula's predecessor, far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro, who prioritized agribusiness expansion over forest protection and weakened environmental agencies. In July, Colombia reported historic lows in deforestation in 2023, driven by a drop in environmental destruction. The country's environment minister Susana Muhamad warned that 2024's figures may not be as promising as a significant rise in deforestation had already been recorded by July due to dry weather caused by El Nino, a weather phenomenon that warms the central Pacific. Illegal economies continue to drive deforestation in the Andean nation. “It’s impossible to overlook the threat posed by organized crime and the economies they control to Amazon conservation,” said Bram Ebus, a consultant for Crisis Group in Latin America. “Illegal gold mining is expanding rapidly, driven by soaring global prices, and the revenues of illicit economies often surpass state budgets allocated to combat them.” In Brazil, large swaths of the rainforest were draped in smoke in August from fires raging across the Amazon, Cerrado savannah, Pantanal wetland and the state of Sao Paulo. Fires are traditionally used for deforestation and for managing pastures, and those man-made blazes were largely responsible for igniting the wildfires. For a second year, the Amazon River fell to desperate lows , leading some countries to declare a state of emergency and distribute food and water to struggling residents. The situation was most critical in Brazil, where one of the Amazon River's main tributaries dropped to its lowest level ever recorded. Cesar Ipenza, an environmental lawyer who lives in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, said he believes people are becoming increasingly aware of the Amazon's fundamental role “for the survival of society as a whole." But, like Miller, he worries about a “point of no return of Amazon destruction.” It was the worst year for Amazon fires since 2005, according to nonprofit Rainforest Foundation US. Between January and October, an area larger than the state of Iowa — 37.42 million acres, or about 15.1 million hectares of Brazil’s Amazon — burned. Bolivia had a record number of fires in the first ten months of the year. “Forest fires have become a constant, especially in the summer months and require particular attention from the authorities who don't how to deal with or respond to them,” Ipenza said. Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Guyana also saw a surge in fires this year. Indigenous voices and rights made headway in 2024 The United Nations conference on biodiversity — this year known as COP16 — was hosted by Colombia. The meetings put the Amazon in the spotlight and a historic agreement was made to give Indigenous groups more of a voice on nature conservation decisions , a development that builds on a growing movement to recognize Indigenous people's role in protecting land and combating climate change. Both Ebus and Miller saw promise in the appointment of Martin von Hildebrand as the new secretary general for the Amazon Treaty Cooperation Organization, announced during COP16. “As an expert on Amazon communities, he will need to align governments for joint conservation efforts. If the political will is there, international backers will step forward to finance new strategies to protect the world’s largest tropical rainforest,” Ebus said. Ebus said Amazon countries need to cooperate more, whether in law enforcement, deploying joint emergency teams to combat forest fires, or providing health care in remote Amazon borderlands. But they need help from the wider world, he said. “The well-being of the Amazon is a shared global responsibility, as consumer demand worldwide fuels the trade in commodities that finance violence and environmental destruction,” he said. Next year marks a critical moment for the Amazon, as Belém do Pará in northern Brazil hosts the first United Nations COP in the region that will focus on climate. “Leaders from Amazon countries have a chance to showcase strategies and demand tangible support," Ebus said. ___ The Associated Press’ climate and environmental coverage receives financial support from multiple private foundations. If you've searched retail outlets for a reliable heavy-duty engine to power a go-kart, moped, or utility device, odds are you've already come across the name DuroMax. Not to be confused with the legendary Duramax diesel engines that have been powering trucks like the SlashGear-approved Chevy Silverado since the early 2000s, DuroMax engines are generally designed for use in small vehicles and devices. Yes, that means they require significantly less power to operate than their General Motors made counterparts . Generally, DuroMax engines — which also power the brand's generators — are gasoline powered, with many utilizing a lawnmower-style pull-start. But if you've done your due diligence in your small engine research, you likely already know about the DuroMax brand and how its engines work. You might even have figured out which engine you need from the brand's extensive small engine family to power your device. One thing you might not have come across in your research is where, exactly, DuroMax engines are manufactured. That's because DuroMax does not explicitly detail the manufacturing location of its engines on its website. The company does, however, note on its FAQ page that its products are proudly designed by its engineers in Ontario, California, adding that its generators and engines are actually manufactured "overseas." However, a little sleuthing on Amazon will turn up a few instances in which a DuroMax rep has answered the question of where the products are made, indicating they are manufactured in China. These days, that may be a legit deal-breaker for some in the market for a heavy-duty small engine. But if you're not deterred from purchasing a DuroMax due to its manufacturing location, you might have an interest in knowing whether or not they are any good before you actually invest in one. If that's the case, you'll be happy to learn that DuroMax engines are generally well thought of by those who've already purchased them. Several of the brand's engines are currently listed for sale through The Home Depot, including its 208cc and 440cc builds. Those engines currently boast ratings of 4.8 stars out of 5 and 4 stars out of 5, respectively, signaling that users are largely satisfied with their purchase. The 208cc is, obviously, the bigger hit, with users largely praising it for ease of use and installation, as well as its performance and price point. However, some did have issues with its durability, a complaint that also dogged the 18hp 440cc model, along with concerns over engines arriving damaged and its actual horsepower rating. As with the 208cc, many users still appreciated the 440cc build's performance and its budget-friendly price. Meanwhile, over on Amazon, users also rated DuroMax's larger 713cc engine well, awarding it 4.4 stars out of 5 overall. As with its lineup partners, customers appreciate the engine's ease of use and installation, and its overall performance. However, one complained of the location of the engine's exhaust port, while others complained about its recoil starter. But overall, it seems you can purchase a DuroMax engine with a decent level of confidence. The announcement of the remake of "The Talos Principle" has sparked excitement and anticipation among both fans of the original game and newcomers to the series. It’s that time of the year again when Delhi and its neighbouring regions brace for an annual apocalypse. Temperatures are dropping, and as the wind slows, pollutants already present in the atmosphere will settle closer to the ground. We won’t be able to breathe. All we can do is hope and pray for divine intervention — for the gods of wind and rain to show mercy. Because, let’s face it, despite all these years, we’ve done next to nothing to combat pollution effectively. The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) was supposed to be an emergency alert system to tackle pollution spikes with immediate measures. But what do we actually do? Wait until the situation becomes unbearable, and then take half-hearted actions, that are too little, too late. Now we’re hearing that the government will play god, using cloud seeding to create artificial rain and wash away the pollutants. But we know this: moisture traps pollutants, often worsening the problem. So, let’s cut to the chase. How do we reclaim the benefits of pollution control? First, a quick recap of what’s been done so far. This story starts in the 1990s, when the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) released its report, ‘Slow Murder’, proposing an action plan. The main culprits behind pollution (and this shouldn’t surprise anyone) were vehicles, poor fuel quality and lax emission standards. In the late 1990s, the Supreme Court intervened, mandating cleaner fuel, stricter emission standards (the foundation of Bharat Stage 1, 2, 3, 4, and now 6 norms), and a boost in public transport. In 1998, the apex court ordered 11,000 buses to hit Delhi’s roads. Over 16 years later, the city hasn’t even achieved half that number. But let’s park that discussion for now. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) emerged as a leapfrog solution — a stopgap while petrol and diesel quality took another decade to improve. CNG brought immediate relief and was a game-changer at the time. Anyone who lived in Delhi in the early 2000s can tell you how controversial this decision was. But it worked. Now, as we stand on the cusp of the electric vehicle revolution, the shift to CNG offers vital lessons. The tech challenge Back then, no country had adopted CNG for vehicles at the scale Delhi proposed. Affordability was another issue. Policies had to guide technological innovation — designing safety standards and bus prototypes, for instance. Financial incentives helped phase out old buses and auto-rick-shaws in favour of CNG models. The implementation challenge This wasn’t about rolling out a few CNG buses. The court ordered a complete transition within two to three years. Coordination and swift decision-making were crucial. Today, Delhi boasts an ambitious e-bus plan. But it’s crawling along, failing to match the explosive rise in private vehicle ownership. In 2023, the number of private vehicles registered in Delhi doubled compared to the previous year. Despite rising petrol and diesel prices eating into household budgets, the surge in private cars chokes not only the roads but also every investment in infrastructure, technology and cleaner fuel. Meanwhile, countless old vehicles still spew pollutants unchecked. The math is simple: even if new vehicles are cleaner, their sheer numbers negate any benefits. The second culprit: dirty fuels From kitchen stoves to factories and thermal power plants, the fuels we burn — primarily biomass or coal — are the second major source of pollution. The Supreme Court banned the dirtiest fuel, petcoke, while Delhi government prohibited coal usage, later extending the ban across the National Capital Region. Thermal power plants were supposed to clean up or shut down. Yet, progress here has been sluggish. The CNG shift taught us that bans only work when people have alternatives. When diesel buses were scrapped, CNG supplies had to be reliable and affordable. Similarly, fiscal policies ensured that clean fuel remained cheaper than its dirtier counterpart. Now, while coal is banned, the high cost of natural gas is driving industries to the brink of non-competitiveness. This is a recipe for failure. The way forward There’s so much more to say, and I promise to keep speaking up about this. But here’s the crux: clean air requires year-round effort. It demands collective action on a massive scale. Let’s stop waiting for miracles. It’s time to act — and act decisively. Steve Granitz/FilmMagic; Monica Schipper/Getty is answering fans’ burning question about the Thanksgiving episode. In an interview with Walter addressed why didn’t play her mother on the ABC sitcom after the actress asked for the role on her social media in earlier this year. The comedian, 61, revealed that logistics got in the way, leading to being cast instead. “There had been so much discussion around it because of the whole thing with Bette Midler,” she began. “And when it wasn’t going to work out because of scheduling, they said they were talking about a couple of people and Talia was one of them.” Walter recalled getting emotional at the thought of working with Shire, saying, “Literally, tears burst into my eyes. Isn’t that bizarre? said, ‘We’re talking to Talia Shire,’ and tears burst out of my eyes. I said, ‘I don’t know why I did that. I feel ridiculous. But she’s royalty,’ and Quinta just said, ‘She is.’” Michael Buckner/Variety via Getty; Jon Kopaloff/Getty Growing up, Walter said she and her family would watch on Thanksgiving, and later, in which Shire starred as Connie Corleone. “When my mother was alive, we would put on the way we watch at Christmas, just 24 hours of it,” Walter shared. “And I know that for Philly people, obviously, it’s the connection, but for my household, it was always and just the evolution of her acting over the years and how we always saw her as being kind of this little meek young woman and then she becomes powerful, I think it’s such a beautiful acting trajectory that she’s had in her career and she’s lovely to work with.” Related: In April, Midler, 79, joked on X (formerly Twitter) about wanting to join when she took the opportunity to name more parts she hoped to get. "Since I'm now using this website to pitch myself on TV shows, I would also like to play Melissa Schemmenti's mother on ," Middler wrote on her since-deleted account, adding: "If you see Quinta Brunson, please tell her." Bruce Glikas/WireImage Midler has worked with stars in the past and opened up about her friendship with , who plays kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard in the series, in July. LIVING ON THE EDGE: Do the Ottawa Senators need Brady Tkachuk to tone down his emotion?A chilling episode of 24 Hours in Police Custody will detail the nightmare a young couple faced at the hands of a cyber stalker. In the episode, which airs tonight (November 25) and aligns with White Ribbon Day – the international campaign to eliminate male violence against women and girls - the harrowing extent of cyber stalking is explored as detectives delve into the case of Daniel Dugdale and Megan Brailsford. They couple was subjected to a terrifying ordeal, including anonymous online death threats, false murder accusations leading to armed police arriving at their door, and constant surveillance that left them living in fear. The programme titled "The Murder Messages" unveills a complex web of deceit and danger, shining a light on the often-underestimated crime of stalking. As part of White Ribbon Day's message and the 16 Days of Action Against Domestic Abuse, it serves as a stark reminder of the unsettling reality some face daily and how crucial it is for such crimes to be addressed seriously by authorities. The campaign's theme this year, #ItStartsWithMe(n), calls on men specifically to confront and challenge misogyny and predatory actions to protect women and girls from abuse. Over the next 16 days, Cambridgeshire police will be supporting a campaign by sharing a wealth of information on their social media platforms about how to report abuse and what support is available locally. In the last 10 months, the force has recorded an alarming 13,079 domestic abuse incidents, marking a 2.7 per cent increase from the previous year, with women making up 72 per cent of the victims, reports Cambridgeshire Live . Detective Inspector Alicia Yorke, who leads the tactical response to domestic abuse at Cambridgeshire police, said: "I would like to thank the victim of this stalking ordeal, who went on to support the investigation as well as sharing their story on 24 Hours in Police Custody. We cannot underestimate the huge impact stalking has on victims and how, when not dealt with appropriately, it can escalate and put them in great danger." The detective stressed: "This programme really demonstrates what victims go through and I hope it empowers others to come forward and report concerns. White Ribbon Day is a chance for men to reflect on what changes they can make to ensure women and girls are safer." She continued: "While both women and men experience incidents of domestic abuse, women are far more likely than men to experience all forms of abuse, including coercive control, physical and sexual violence. The force, along with its partners, is wholly committed to ensuring women and girls are safe and feel safe by tackling violence, intimidation and harassment. We urge anyone affected by violence to come forward safe in the knowledge they will be fully supported." 24 Hours in Police Custody airs tonight at 9pm on Channel 4 and again at 10pm on Channel 4+1. A designated disability minister will be appointed to each Government department to “champion disability inclusion and accessibility”, the Government has announced. Work and pensions minister Sir Stephen Timms said the move aims to drive “real improvements” for disabled people, whom the ministers will be encouraged to engage with on a regular basis. He told the Commons: “I am very pleased to be able to announce today the appointment of new lead ministers for disability in each Government department, they will represent the interests of disabled people, champion disability inclusion and accessibility within their departments. “I’m going to chair regular meetings with them and will encourage them to engage directly with disabled people and their representative organisations, as they take forward their departmental priorities. “And I look forward to this new group of lead ministers for disability together driving real improvements across Government for disabled people.” This came during an adjournment debate on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, where Liberal Democrat MP Steve Darling raised concerns about “floating bus stops”, which have a cycle lane between the stop and the pavement. Intervening, the MP for Torbay, who is registered blind, said: “The Government needs to ban floating bus stops.” Sir Stephen said: “I do think this issue about floating bus stops is an important issue which we need to work across Government to reflect on.” Labour MP Debbie Abrahams, who led the debate, had earlier criticised the lack of accessibility for disabled people on trains. The Oldham East and Saddleworth MP said: “Our train network does not have level access, and we heard Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson from the other place make this plea back in the summer, absolutely outrageous what she was put through. “But I was absolutely shocked to find, when I had a presentation of the TransPennine route upgrade, that the rolling stock yet to be commissioned is not going to provide that level access. “It’s absolute nonsense, it’s not even in the design of that procurement, so we must do better than this.”

HOUSTON (AP) — An elaborate parody appears to be behind an effort to resurrect Enron, the Houston-based energy company that exemplified the worst in American corporate fraud and greed after it went bankrupt in 2001. If its return is comedic, some former employees who lost everything in Enron’s collapse aren’t laughing. “It’s a pretty sick joke and it disparages the people that did work there. And why would you want to even bring it back up again?” said former Enron employee Diana Peters, who represented workers in the company’s bankruptcy proceedings. Here’s what to know about the history of Enron and the purported effort to bring it back. Once the nation’s seventh-largest company, Enron filed for bankruptcy protection on Dec. 2, 2001, after years of accounting tricks could no longer hide billions of dollars in debt or make failing ventures appear profitable. The energy company's collapse put more than 5,000 people out of work, wiped out more than $2 billion in employee pensions and rendered $60 billion in Enron stock worthless. Its aftershocks were felt throughout the energy sector. Twenty-four Enron executives , including former CEO Jeffrey Skilling , were eventually convicted for their roles in the fraud. Enron founder Ken Lay’s convictions were vacated after he died of heart disease following his 2006 trial. On Monday — the 23rd anniversary of the bankruptcy filing — a company representing itself as Enron announced in a news release that it was relaunching as a “company dedicated to solving the global energy crisis.” It also posted a video on social media, advertised on at least one Houston billboard and a took out a full-page ad in the Houston Chronicle In the minute-long video that was full of generic corporate jargon, the company talks about “growth” and “rebirth.” It ends with the words, “We’re back. Can we talk?” Enron's new website features a company store, where various items featuring the brand's tilted “E” logo are for sale, including a $118 hoodie. In an email, company spokesperson Will Chabot said the new Enron was not doing any interviews yet, but that "We’ll have more to share soon.” Signs point to the comeback being a joke. In the “terms of use and conditions of sale” on the company's website, it says “the information on the website about Enron is First Amendment protected parody, represents performance art, and is for entertainment purposes only.” Documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show that College Company, an Arkansas-based LLC, owns the Enron trademark. The co-founder of College Company is Connor Gaydos, who helped create a joke conspiracy theory that claims all birds are actually surveillance drones for the government. Peters said that since learning about the “relaunch” of Enron, she has spoken with several other former employees and they are also upset by it. She said the apparent stunt was “in poor taste.” “If it’s a joke, it’s rude, extremely rude. And I hope that they realize it and apologize to all of the Enron employees,” Peters said. Peters, who is 74 years old, said she is still working in information technology because “I lost everything in Enron, and so my Social Security doesn’t always take care of things I need done.” “Enron’s downfall taught us critical lessons about corporate ethics, accountability, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. Enron’s legacy was the employees in the trenches. Leave Enron buried,” she said. This story was corrected to fix the spelling of Ken Lay’s first name, which had been misspelled “Key.” Follow Juan A. Lozano on X at https://x.com/juanlozano70Organizations today widely use cloud services to scale operations, improve flexibility and focus more on their daily mission, rather than managing complex IT infrastructure. But dark clouds have emerged as security breaches have wrought serious repercussions, including lengthy operational disruptions and financial damage, whether through immediate response costs or longer-term regulatory fines and/or revenue losses. Economic fallout from cloud security threats According to the IBM's 2024 Cost of a Data Breach Report , the global average cost of a data breach rose to $4.88 million, from $4.45 million reported in 2023. And breaches involving public clouds were most expensive, averaging $5.17 million per incident. Undoubtedly, cloud-based attacks have surged. CrowdStrike's Counter Adversary Operations (CAO) report found that cloud intrusions have increased by 75%. A notable breach earlier this year targeted the cloud infrastructure of a leading software provider. Attackers used phishing and cloud account takeovers to infiltrate critical executive applications, exploiting weak identity management and misconfigured access controls. Intruders were able to escalate privileges and compromise sensitive executive communications and financial data. The fallout from this breach led to heightened regulatory scrutiny, stock price dips, and an erosion of customer trust, underscoring how a single cloud vulnerability can ripple across organizations. Rising cyber threats are driving the need for robust cloud security measures to better protect sensitive data, ensure business continuity, and safeguard financial stability. A deeper dive into cloud security vulnerabilities Verizon's 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) highlighted a striking 180% rise in attacks exploiting vulnerabilities, especially in web applications often used to access cloud services. Vulnerabilities in web applications can be exploited to gain unauthorized access to sensitive data and cloud resources. The most common vulnerabilities in cloud environments include: Zero-day exploits take advantage of software vulnerabilities that are unknown to the vendor and have no available patch, leaving "zero days" to prepare an effective response. Phishing and social engineering attacks manipulate individuals into revealing confidential information or granting unauthorized access. Misconfigurations , such as incorrect security settings or improperly managed access controls can generate security gaps that must be closed. Increasingly, cloud security vulnerabilities emerge from the flexibility inherent in cloud-based services and the challenges involved in managing third-parties, which may include: A loss of control after moving key application workloads into the cloud, which means sensitive data could be anywhere within the parameters of your organization's networks. A lack of trust in your cloud service provider, as the precise level of security provided in externally provided cloud services may not be fully understood. Multi-tenancy risks stemming from multiple customers sharing a single cloud service's resources while keeping their data and applications separate. This introduces the possibility that your organization's data may somehow be shared without authorization. Investing in proactive cloud security measures To combat cloud security threats, organizations can proactively adopt robust vulnerability management practices, continuous monitoring and comprehensive incident response plans. As a leader in the field of cloud security, Verizon's cybersecurity solutions have evolved to help customers address escalating threats and help protect against cloud-related vulnerabilities. Verizon's capabilities have been heavily influenced by zero day vulnerabilities, which demonstrate the importance of not relying on a single point of control, and opting instead on maintaining defense-in-depth. To that end, Verizon works continuously on the integration of cloud security controls. For example, its vulnerability management services include infrastructure as a service (IaaS) cloud security controls, via Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM). There are also software as a service (SaaS) controls offered through cloud access security brokers (CASB). Proper segmentation, isolation and application of the least privilege principles can help lock down devices and help prevent lateral movements to reduce the impact of breaches. And in addition to proactive measures, organizations also look to detect and respond quickly to incidents as they happen. In many cloud services, critical vulnerabilities can be pushed to security operations centers (SOCs) for immediate action. For example, while many zero-day exploits on public-facing services are impossible to prevent, quick detection can help minimize lateral movements and can prevent threat actors from gaining access to sensitive data or critical cloud resources. Verizon provides integrated SOC services that can help organizations proactively defend against attacks, such as Cyber Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) services. And to react quickly, Verizon offers Managed Detection and Response (MDR) services as well. Also, Verizon's Zero Trust Dynamic Access solution ensures connectivity and security for private, on-premises, cloud and SaaS resources. By implementing a Zero Trust framework, organizations can eliminate blind spots and ensure that every access request is thoroughly vetted regardless of its origin. Future-proofing cloud security Because spending on global public cloud services is forecast to reach $805 billion in 2024 and double in size by 2028, according to IDC research , it's clear the need to strengthen cloud security will only grow. By leveraging technologies such as data encryption, IAM, and real-time threat detection, organizations across all sectors can help safeguard sensitive information and help better maintain customer trust in the years to come. For the latest in cloud security strategies, explore Verizon's tailored solutions that can provide enhanced protection across various sectors, helping organizations to operate smoothly, securely and profitably. Rams QB Matthew Stafford riding another December hot streakIn light of these doubts, an investigation was launched to uncover the truth behind the situation. Various witnesses were interviewed, and evidence was gathered to piece together a clearer picture of what transpired. As the pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place, a different narrative emerged, shedding light on the actual events that took place.
The most recent meeting between Real Madrid and Atalanta occurred on July 24, 2021, in a pre-season friendly match. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective, and infections become difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death. The World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among One Health stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. WAAW is celebrated from 18-24 November every year. The theme for the World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) 2024 is "Educate. Advocate. Act now." This theme was chosen based on feedback from an online survey among stakeholders from the human, animal, plant, and environmental health sectors, which collected nearly 200 responses globally. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global health and socioeconomic crisis. It has significant impacts on human and animal health, food production, and the environment. Drug-resistant pathogens pose a threat to everyone, everywhere. Yet, much more can be done to raise public and stakeholder awareness. Therefore, this year's theme calls on the global community to educate stakeholders on AMR, advocate for bold commitments, and take concrete actions in response to AMR. The 2024 UNGA High-level Meeting on AMR and the fourth Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR, for instance, provide a critical window of opportunity for political and financial commitments as well as increased accountability in response to AMR. NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks closed higher on Wall Street, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average to another all-time high. The Dow added 1% Monday to the record it set on Friday. The S&P 500 rose 0.3%, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.3%. Treasury yields eased in the bond market after President-elect Donald Trump said he wants Scott Bessent, a hedge fund manager, to be his Treasury Secretary. Smaller companies can feel a big boost from easier borrowing costs, and the Russell 2000 index of small stocks jumped 1.5%, closing just shy of the record high it set three years ago. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is set to break more records Monday as U.S. stocks rise to add to last week’s gains. The S&P 500 was 0.2% higher, as of 3 p.m. Eastern time, and sitting just below its all-time high set two weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 397 points, or 0.9%, to its own record set on Friday, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.1% higher. Treasury yields also eased in the bond market amid what some analysts called a “Bessent bounce” after President-elect Donald Trump said he wants Scott Bessent , a hedge fund manager, to be his Treasury Secretary. Bessent has argued for reducing the U.S. government’s deficit, which is how much more it spends than it takes in through tax and other revenue. Such an approach could soothe worries on Wall Street that Trump’s policies may lead to a much bigger deficit, which in turn would put upward pressure on Treasury yields. After climbing above 4.44% immediately after Trump’s election, the yield on the 10-year Treasury fell back to 4.26% Monday and down from 4.41% late Friday. That’s a notable move, and lower yields help make it cheaper for all kinds of companies and households to borrow money. They also give a boost to prices for stocks and other investments. That helped stocks of smaller companies lead the way, and the Russell 2000 index of smaller stocks jumped 2%. It’s set to top its all-time high, which was set three years ago. Smaller companies can feel bigger boosts from lower borrowing costs because of the need of many to borrow to grow. The two-year Treasury yield, which more closely tracks the market’s expectations for what the Federal Reserve will do with overnight interest rates, also eased sharply. The Fed began cutting its main interest rate just a couple months ago from a two-decade high, hoping to keep the job market humming after bringing high inflation nearly all the way down to its 2% target. But immediately after Trump’s victory, traders had reduced bets for how many cuts the Fed may deliver next year. They were worried Trump's preference for lower tax rates and higher spending on the border would balloon the national debt. . A report coming on Wednesday could influence how much the Fed may cut rates. Economists expect it to show that an underlying inflation trend the Fed prefers to use accelerated to 2.8% last month from 2.7% in September. Higher inflation would make the Fed more reluctant to cut rates as deeply or as quickly as it would otherwise. Goldman Sachs economist David Mericle expects that to slow by the end of next year to 2.4%, but he said inflation would be even lower if not for expected tariff increases on imports from China and autos favored by Trump. In the stock market, Bath & Body Works jumped 19.1% after delivering stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. The seller of personal care products and home fragrances also raised its financial forecasts for the full year, even though it still sees a “volatile retail environment” and a shorter holiday shopping season this year. Much focus has been on how resilient U.S. shoppers can remain, given high prices across the economy and still-high interest rates. Last week, two major retailers sent mixed messages. Target tumbled after giving a dour forecast for the holiday shopping season. It followed Walmart , which gave a much more encouraging outlook. Another big retailer, Macy’s, said Monday its sales for the latest quarter were in line with its expectations, but it will delay the release of its full financial results. It found a single employee had intentionally hid up to $154 million in delivery expenses, and it needs more time to complete its investigation. Macy’s stock fell 2.9%. Among the market's leaders were several companies related to the housing industry. Monday's drop in Treasury yields could translate into easier mortgage rates, which could spur activity for housing. Builders FirstSource, a supplier or building materials, rose 6.2%. Homebuilders, D.R. Horton, PulteGroup and Lennar all rose at least 5.8%. In stock markets abroad, indexes moved modestly across much of Europe after finishing mixed in Asia. In the crypto market, bitcoin was trading around $96,800 after threatening to hit $100,000 late last week for the first time. ___ AP Business Writer Elaine Kurtenbach contributed. (AP) — The Justice Department and Google have made their closing arguments in a trial alleging Google’s online advertising technology constitutes an illegal monopoly. The arguments in federal court Monday in northern Virginia came as Google already faces a possible breakup of the company over its ubiquitous search engine. The Justice Department says it will seek the breakup of Google to remedy its search engine monopoly. The case in Virginia focuses not on the search engine but on technology that matches online advertisers to consumers on the internet. A judge is expected to rule by the end of the year. ‘Busiest Thanksgiving ever’: How the TSA plans to handle record air travel DALLAS (AP) — The Thanksgiving travel rush is expected to be bigger than ever this year. AAA predicts that nearly 80 million people in the U.S. will venture at least 50 miles from home between Tuesday and next Monday — most of them by car. Thanksgiving Day falling so late this year has altered traditional travel patterns. At airports, the Transportation Security Administration says it could screen a record number of U.S. air travelers on Sunday. Meanwhile, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration says a shortage of air traffic controllers could cause flight delays. Transportation analytics company INRIX says roads could be congested on Monday with both commuters and returning holiday travelers. Macy’s says employee hid up to $154 million in expenses, delaying Q3 earnings Macy’s says it’s delaying the release of its fiscal third-quarter earnings results after it discovered an up to $154 million accounting-related issue. The company did provide some preliminary results for its third quarter, including that net sales fell 2.4% to $4.74 billion. (AP) — California could offer state tax rebates for electric vehicle purchases if the incoming Trump administration eliminates the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Gov. Gavin Newsom says Monday he'll propose creating a new version of the state’s successful Clean Vehicle Rebate Program, which was phased out in 2023 after funding nearly 600,000 new cars and trucks. Officials didn’t say how much the program would cost or how the rebates would work. Newsom’s proposal is part of his plan to protect California’s progressive policies ahead of Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s second term. But a budget shortfall could complicate California’s resistance efforts. Warren Buffett gives away another $1.1B and plans for distributing his $147B fortune after his death OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Investor Warren Buffett renewed his Thanksgiving tradition of giving by announcing plans Monday to hand more than $1.1 billion of Berkshire Hathaway stock to four of his family's foundations, and he offered new details about who will be handing out the rest of his fortune after his death. Buffett has said previously that his three kids will distribute his remaining $147.4 billion fortune in the 10 years after his death, but now he has also designated successors for them because it’s possible that Buffett’s children could die before giving it all away. Buffett said he has no regrets about his decision to start giving away his fortune in 2006. Stock market today: Dow hits another record as stocks rise NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose, with those benefiting the most from lower interest rates and a stronger economy leading the way. The S&P 500 climbed 0.3% Monday to pull closer to its record set two weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 440 points to its own record set on Friday, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.3%. They got a boost from easing Treasury yields after President-elect Donald Trump said he wants hedge-fund manager Scott Bessent to be his Treasury Secretary. Smaller companies can feel a big boost from easier borrowing costs, and the Russell 2000 index of small stocks finished just shy of its record. Workers at Charlotte airport, an American Airlines hub, go on strike during Thanksgiving travel week CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — American Airlines says it doesn’t expect significant disruptions to flights this week as a result of a labor strike at its hub in Charlotte, North Carolina. Service workers there walked out Monday during a busy week of Thanksgiving travel to protest what they say are unlivable wages. Employees of ABM and Prospect Airport Services authorized the work stoppage. Union spokesperson Sean Keady says the strike is expected to last 24 hours. The companies contract with American Airlines to provide services such as cleaning airplane interiors, removing trash and escorting passengers in wheelchairs. The companies have acknowledged the seriousness of a strike during the holiday travel season. At the crossroads of news and opinion, 'Morning Joe' hosts grapple with aftermath of Trump meeting The reaction of those who defended “Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski for meeting with President-elect Trump sounds almost quaint in the days of opinionated journalism. Doesn't it makes sense, they said, for hosts of a political news show to meet with such an important figure? But given how “Morning Joe” has attacked Trump, its viewers felt insulted. Many reacted quickly by staying away. It all reflects the broader trend of opinion crowding out traditional journalist in today's marketplace, and the expectations that creates among consumers. By mid-week, the show's audience was less than two-thirds what it has typically been this year. Eggs are available -- but pricier -- as the holiday baking season begins Egg prices are on the rise again as a lingering outbreak of bird flu coincides with high demand during the holiday baking season. The average price for a dozen eggs in U.S. cities was $3.37 in October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That was up 63% from October 2023, when a dozen eggs cost an average of $2.07. Avian influenza is the main culprit. The current bird flu outbreak that began in February 2022 has led to the slaughter of more than 111 million birds, mostly egg-laying chickens. But the American Egg Board says egg shortages at grocery stores have been isolated and temporary so far. ‘Buy now, pay later’ is more popular than ever. It can cost more than you think NEW YORK (AP) — More shoppers are using ‘buy now, pay later’ plans heading into Black Friday and the holiday season, as the ability to spread out payments looks attractive at a time when Americans still feel the lingering effect of inflation and already have record-high credit card debt. Experts say the short-term loans can lead consumers to overextend themselves and warn that those who use credit cards for the service face higher interest expenses. The data firm Adobe Analytics predicts shoppers will spend 11.4% more this holiday season using buy now, pay later than they did a year ago.

King and PM honour former US president Jimmy Carter after his death aged 100
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani security forces launched an operation Tuesday night to disperse supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan who had gathered in the capital to demand his release from prison. The latest development came hours after thousands of Khan supporters, defying government warnings, broke through a barrier of shipping containers blocking off Islamabad and entered a high-security zone, where they clashed with security forces, facing tear gas shelling, mass detentions and gunfire. Tension has been high in Islamabad since Sunday when supporters of the former prime minister began a “long march” from the restive northwest to demand his release. Khan has been in a prison for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal cases that his party says are politically motivated. Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, led the protest, but she fled as police pushed back against demonstrators. Hundreds of Khan’s supporters are being arrested in the ongoing nighttime operation, and police are also seeking to arrest Bibi. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters that the Red Zone, which houses government buildings and embassies, and the surrounding areas have been cleared. Leaders from Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI, have also fled the protest site. Earlier Tuesday, Pakistan’s army took control of D-Chowk, a large square in the Red Zone, where visiting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is staying. Since Monday, Naqvi had threatened that security forces would use live fire if protesters fired weapons at them. “We have now authorized the police to respond as necessary,” Naqvi said Tuesday while visiting the square. Before the operation began, protester Shahzor Ali said people had taken to the streets because Khan had called for them. “We will stay here until Khan joins us. He will decide what to do next,” Ali said. “If they fire bullets again, we will respond with bullets,” he said. Protester Fareeda Bibi, who is not related to Khan’s wife, said people have suffered greatly for the last two years. “We have really suffered for the last two years, whether it is economically, politically or socially. We have been ruined. I have not seen such a Pakistan in my life,” she said. Authorities have struggled to contain the protest-related violence. Six people, including four members of the security services, were killed when a vehicle rammed them on a street overnight into Tuesday. A police officer died in a separate incident. Dozens of Khan supporters beat a videographer covering the protest for The Associated Press and took his camera. He sustained head injuries and was treated in a hospital. By Tuesday afternoon, fresh waves of protesters made their way unopposed to their final destination in the Red Zone. Most demonstrators had the flag of Khan’s party around their shoulders or wore its tricolors on accessories. Naqvi said Khan’s party had rejected a government offer to rally on the outskirts of the city. Information Minister Atta Tarar warned there would be a severe government reaction to the violence. He said the government did not want Bushra Bibi to achieve her goal of freeing Khan. “She wants bodies falling to the ground. She wants bloodshed,” he said. The government says only the courts can order Khan’s release. He was ousted in 2022 through a no-confidence vote in Parliament. In a bid to foil the unrest, police have arrested more than 4,000 Khan supporters since Friday and suspended mobile and internet services in some parts of the country. Messaging platforms were also experiencing severe disruption in the capital. Khan’s party relies heavily on social media and uses messaging platforms such as WhatsApp to share information, including details of events. The X platform, which is banned in Pakistan, is no longer accessible, even with a VPN. Last Thursday, a court prohibited rallies in the capital and Naqvi said anyone violating the ban would be arrested. Travel between Islamabad and other cities has become nearly impossible because of shipping containers blocking the roads. All education institutions remain closed. Pakistan's Stock Exchange lost more than $1.7 billion Tuesday due to rising political tensions, according to economist Mohammed Sohail from Topline Securities. Associated Press writers Munir Ahmed in Islamabad and Asim Tanveer in Multan, Pakistan, contributed to this report.Dell Technologies Q3 revenue falls short of estimates as weak PC demand weighs
Herro leads Heat over Rockets in game marred by fight and ejections in final minuteBrawl erupts in Serbian parliament BELGRADE: Scuffles broke out in the Serbian parliament on Monday after opposition legislators raised banners accusing the ruling coalition of trying to shirk responsibility for the collapse of a train station roof that killed 15 people earlier this month. Radomir Lazovic of the opposition Green-Left Front party placed a picture of a red hand captioned ‘you have blood on your hands’ on the speaker’s platform, video footage from the N1 television station showed. The health minister, Zatibor Loncar, approached him and started arguing. Other deputies rushed in front of the speaker’s platform shouting, pulling and hitting one another. The opposition deputies shouted: “killers, killers”. Some held a picture of the president, Aleksandar Vucic with red hands up and a sign saying: “No one is to be blamed”. The disaster at the recently renovated train station in Novi Sad has turned into a protracted political headache for Vucic and his ruling party, who the opposition and many ordinary citizens accuse of nepotism and corruption - charges the politicians deny. Twelve people, including a former minister were arrested over the incident last week, but that has failed to alleviate the pressure. The opposition says authorities waited too long to act against potential perpetrators. The parliament was due to debate the 2025 budget on Monday, but the opposition demanded a debate on the disaster. They also filed a no-confidence motion against the government, although the parliament speaker, Ana Brnabic, said it would not be on the agenda on Monday.Trailblazing model Dayle Haddon dies from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning
Now that starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is back in the lineup, the Miami Dolphins are starting to play like the team they were expected to be at the start of the season. They have won three games in a row, scored at least 23 points in each of the past four games and are starting to create a buzz that they might be able to go on a second-half run to get back into the AFC playoff picture. Their Thursday night game against the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving is going to be a pivotal one in their season. It will not only tell us a lot about their chances of going on a run for the playoffs, but also whether or not the team is making any progress in its ability to actually compete with the best teams in the league. When it comes to their playoff chances for this season, the Dolphins have almost no margin for error. They are already on the outside of the AFC playoff picture looking in and two games back of the seventh spot. Realistically speaking, it is probably going to take at least 10 wins to get in the AFC field, which means the Dolphins could not afford to lose more than two games the rest of the way. They might not be able to lose more than one game. While the schedule does have some favorable matchups, including two games against the New York Jets and a game against the Cleveland Browns, there are also a couple of potential playoff teams still looming. That includes Thursday's game at Green Bay, a Week 15 game at Houston and a Week 16 game against San Francisco. That brings us to the other issue here with the Dolphins. Can they actually beat teams like that? That has been the one constant issue for them under head coach Mike McDaniel. In his first two full seasons as the Dolphins' head coach, they are just 3-11 against teams that made the playoffs (including the two playoff games) and were only 1-6 a year ago. The truly staggering thing about that stat is they actually beat two playoff teams within the first three weeks of the 2022 season (Baltimore and Buffalo) and then went just 1-11 in the 12 games after that against playoff teams. So far this season, the Dolphins are 0-4 against teams currently in a playoff position or that have a winning record and 5-2 against teams with a losing record or out of the playoff picture. That is not a sustainable, winning formula to only beat the non-playoff teams and keep losing to the above-average teams. That is why Thursday's game will tell us a lot about what this team is capable of. The Dolphins have their quarterback healthy again. They are building some momentum and playing their way back into the playoff picture. They are getting a chance to play a legitimate playoff team in the NFC. If they win, it gets them back to .500 for the season with some winnable games ahead and proves they can at least beat a good team. If they lose? Their already slim playoff hopes take an even bigger hit and questions remain about their ability to beat good teams.

The Edmonton Oilers lost disappointingly on Sunday, falling 5-3 to the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, closing out a lackluster weekend in California. It was the mom’s trip weekend for the players, and the boys should feel bad about their collective effort. It was particularly bad in Anaheim, where after building a 3-1 lead, the team collapsed and the Oilers unraveled defensively, allowing four unanswered goals. The death nail was Ryan Strome ’s first in 13 games, which put the Ducks ahead 4-3 late in the third period. The Oilers played well in the first, despite not getting many shots on net. They’d killed off four successive power plays and scored on their two chances to take a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately, defensive lapses in the second and third allowed the Ducks to take over 5-v-5 and tie the game. A handful of players struggled, but a Darnell Nurse misplays on the wall proved costly. He was involved in three consecutive Ducks goals. Edmonton was not good at even strength, as they were outshot and outplayed 5-on-5, managing just 23 shots on goal. Goaltender Calvin Pickard played well until the dam broke. When it did, things unraveled. Questions About Lines and Depth Will Need to Be Answered for the Oilers This loss raises further concerns about Edmonton’s depth issues and line combinations. Heading into the weekend, head coach Kris Knoblauch tried to fix what wasn’t necessarily broken. He changed up the second and third lines despite their effectiveness, and it cost the Oilers during both games. Against L.A., Adam Henrique had one of his worst games as an Oiler. Not coincidentally, he wasn’t playing with Connor Brown and Mattias Janmark . The reason for the change was to give Vitkor Arvidsson a look on line two, which bumped Kapanen down to line three. The juggling continued on Sunday, and with no clear second-line combination, head coach Kris Knoblauch paired stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the top line in the third period, highlighting ongoing lineup issues. Arvidsson has shown signs of improvement recently, but giving him priority at the expense of line chemistry in other areas will need to be monitored closely. Adding to the lingering questions is what to do with veteran Jeff Skinner . He was a healthy scratch, making it hard to know what the next steps are when it comes to his usage. With this loss marking one of their worst performances of the season, the Oilers will look to bounce back at home on New Year’s Eve as they host the Utah Hockey Club for the first time at Rogers Place. Perhaps it was the pressure of the moms being on the road with the team, but one would hope not. The Oilers need to be better. It’s probably a good thing the moms are with them after this performance. Some of the Oilers might need a little love. More info John McGinn admits the stories about his botched transfer to Celtic in 2018 really annoy him - but hasn't ruled out pulling on the colours of his boyhood club further down the line. The Scotland star was reportedly on the brink of sealing a £3.5million switch to Parkhead from Hibs in the summer of 2018, only to end up joining current club Aston Villa after Celtic stalled with their offer. The 30-year-old has since gone onto establish himself as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League and helped Unai Emery's Villa qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 42 years with a fourth place finish last season. But appearing on the Premier Sports Scottish Football Social Club , McGinn reveals he still harbours ambitions of wearing the green-and-white one day. He said: "The stories about that whole saga have grown arms and legs over the years and it winds me up. You never say never. "When I was young all I ever dreamed about was playing for Celtic and didn't ever see myself playing for Aston Villa. But I have got two-and-a-half years left at Villa, whether that sees me off or if I've still got something left in the tank we will see. You never know." McGinn has also told Celtic three key men to watch out for when Brendan Rodgers' side host Club Brugge at Parkhead on match day five of the Champions League on Wednesday night. The Villa skipper was in the Clarets team that went 1-0 down to the Belgian side in Brugge earlier this month and has given an insight into the players that impressed him the most. "It was a tough game", he added. "They had the left winger (Christos) Tzolis who used to be at Norwich who caused us a lot of problems. They had a striker (Ferran Jutgla) who was really old-fashioned, robust and had his shorts tucked up right to his chest. He actually looked like a juniors striker but he was one of the best players on the park. "They were organised and we couldn't really break them down. They let us have a lot of the ball and then they broke fast. They had a really good young right-sided Ecuadorian centre back, (Joel Ordonez) he was excellent. "But I think at home, Celtic will be too strong for them. I watched the game against Leipzig and if they play anywhere near as good as that then I'm sure that they won't have any issues." EU rules requiring all new smartphones, tablets and cameras to use the same charger came into force on Saturday, in a change Brussels said will cut costs and waste. Manufacturers are now obliged to fit devices sold in the 27-nation bloc with a USB-C, the port chosen by the European Union as the common standard for charging electronic tools. "Starting today, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, speakers, keyboards and many other electronics sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port," the EU Parliament wrote on social media X. The EU has said the single charger rule will simplify the life of Europeans and slash costs for consumers. By allowing consumers to purchase a new device without a new charger, it will also reduce the mountain of obsolete chargers, the bloc has argued. The law was first approved in 2022 following a tussle with US tech giant Apple. It allowed companies until December 28 this year to adapt. Makers of laptops will have extra time, from early 2026, to also follow suit. Most devices already use these cables, but Apple was more than a little reluctant. The firm said in 2021 that such regulation "stifles innovation", but by September last year it had begun shipping phones with the new port. Makers of electronic consumer items in Europe had agreed on a single charging norm from dozens on the market a decade ago under a voluntary agreement with the European Commission. But Apple, the world's biggest seller of smartphones, refused to abide by it and ditch its Lightning ports. Other manufacturers kept their alternative cables going, meaning there were about half a dozen types knocking around, creating a jumble of cables for consumers. USB-C ports can charge at up to 100 Watts, transfer data up to 40 gigabits per second, and can serve to hook up to external displays. At the time of its approval, the commission said the law was expected to save at least 200 million euros ($208 million) per year and cut more than a thousand tonnes of EU electronic waste every year. "It's time for THE charger," the European Commission wrote on X on Saturday. "It means better-charging technology, reduced e-waste, and less fuss to find the chargers you need." ub/givNoneWall Street stocks surged to fresh records Wednesday on hopes about easing US monetary policy, shrugging off political upheaval in South Korea and France. All three major US indices scored records, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average finishing above 45,000 for the first time. "The market at this point is looking for excuses to go up, and there's not really anything that might work against that narrative," said Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers. "Over the last couple of days, it's managed to ignore all sorts of inconvenient things and decided that the situation in France doesn't matter for them," Sosnick said of the stock market. "The situation in Korea doesn't matter." South Korea's stock market fell less than feared and the won rebounded from earlier losses after President Yoon Suk Yeol swiftly reversed a decision to impose martial law. In Europe, Paris stocks managed to advance as France's government faced looming no-confidence votes. Late Wednesday in Paris, French lawmakers voted to oust the government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier after just three months in office, pushing the country further into political uncertainty. For the first time in over sixty years, the National Assembly lower house toppled the incumbent government, approving a no-confidence motion that had been proposed by the hard left but which crucially was backed by the far-right headed by Marine Le Pen. "Political turmoil in both France and South Korea provide a uncertain backdrop for global markets, with the likely removal of both Barnier and Yoon bringing the potential for both countries to find a fresh direction," said Joshua Mahony, chief market analyst at Scope Markets. Thomas Mathews, head of Asia-Pacific markets at Capital Economics, said the losses in Seoul could have been "much worse" had the president not aborted his plan. "Rarely does a combined sell-off in a country's stocks, bonds and currency feel like a relief rally," he said. Oil prices turned lower after surging around 2.5 percent Tuesday, mainly after the United States sanctioned 35 companies and ships it accused of involvement with Iran's "shadow fleet" illicitly selling Iranian oil to foreign markets. Major producers at the OPEC+ grouping led by Saudi Arabia and Russia were set to meet Thursday to discuss extending output limits. Back in New York, major indices were led by the Nasdaq, which piled on 1.3 percent to finish at a third straight record. Wednesday's gains came after payroll firm ADP said US private-sector hiring in November came in at a lower-than-expected 146,000 jobs, while a survey from the Institute for Supply Management showed weaker sentiment than expected in the services sector. But the lackluster data boosts expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates later this month. At a New York conference, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell refrained from tipping his hand, but he "didn't say anything that would scare the market," said Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare. O'Hare noted that Wednesday's gains were led by large tech names such as Nvidia and Microsoft, which are major AI players. The boost followed strong results from Salesforce, which was the biggest gainer in the Dow with an 11 percent jump. His comments were a response to a post by popular X (formerly Twitter) personality Mario Nawfal, who shared an article discussing Singapore's "baby crisis" and the potential role of robots in mitigating its effects. Musk’s remarks have reignited global discussions about demographic challenges faced by developed societies. "Singapore (and many other countries) are going extinct", Musk said in his post. Singapore’s Fertility Plunge Singapore has witnessed a significant decline in its Total Fertility Rate (TFR) over the past three decades. In 2023, the country’s resident TFR dropped to a historic low of 0.97—the first time it has fallen below 1.0. This means that, on average, each woman is having fewer than one child. — elonmusk (@elonmusk) The primary cause of this decline lies in shifting societal norms. According to Singapore government data, a growing number of women in their prime childbearing years (25–34) are choosing to remain single. Additionally, the marital fertility rate for women in their 20s has seen a marked drop, contributing to around 32% of the overall decline in TFR. From 1990 to 2005, marital fertility rates among women aged 25–34 fell sharply, although a slight recovery was observed in 2023. Robots to the Rescue? Despite the concerning fertility trends, Singapore's technological advancements might help mitigate the demographic impact, a Newsweek article, cited by Mario Nawfal said . The city-state ranks second globally in robot density, with 770 industrial robots per 10,000 workers, according to the International Federation of Robotics. This technological edge allows Singapore to offset its labor shortages, especially given its high labor costs and small manufacturing base. Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, a company investing heavily in humanoid robots designed to perform repetitive and hazardous tasks, appears optimistic about the role of robotics in addressing such challenges. Netizens React to Elon Musk comments Musk’s comments and Singapore’s demographic trends have sparked a wide range of reactions online. While some emphasized Singapore's robust immigration policies as a buffer against population decline, others highlighted the deeper societal and economic issues underlying low birth rates. Others pointed to societal and economic factors contributing to the reluctance to have children. Rising costs of living, paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyles, and concerns about financial stability were frequently cited as barriers to starting or expanding families. The burden of ensuring a secure future for children in an increasingly competitive world appears to weigh heavily on many individuals. Singapore’s struggles with low fertility rates mirror challenges faced by many developed nations. Declining birth rates threaten long-term economic growth, social stability, and labor force sustainability.
It couldn't stop the run, couldn't keep teams out of the end zone, couldn't get off the field. Now the script has flipped. Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley's group is playing stouter, holding teams — even the high-scoring Detroit Lions — largely in check long enough to give Indy a chance to win, and it's the Colts offense that has struggled. “They are playing their tails off. You don’t want them on the field a bunch and as an offense you want to be able to play complementary football,” running back Jonathan Taylor said after Sunday's 24-6 loss. “I would say specifically on offense, it sucks when you can’t help your defense out when they are fighting their tails off all game.” Indy's defense held up its end of the bargain by limiting the Lions (10-1) to 14 first-half points and allowing just 24, matching Detroit's lowest output since Week 3. The problem: Even when the Colts (5-7) did get Detroit off the field, they couldn't sustain drives or score touchdowns. Again. Anthony Richardson provided the bulk of the ground game by rushing 10 times for 61 yards, mostly early. Taylor managed just 35 yards on 11 carries and a season-high 10 penalties constantly forced the Colts to dig out from deep deficits. Part of that was by design. “We knew Jonathan Taylor was going to be the guy we needed to shut down,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “We did that. The quarterback runs. It got us on a couple but overall, we did what we needed to do, and we kept them out of that game." Part of it could be because of an injury-battered offensive line that has started three rookies each of the past two weeks and finished the previous game with the same three rookies. Whatever the fix, Indy needs a good solution. There is good news for Indy is that its schedule now gets substantially more manageable. After losing four of five, all to teams in playoff position and three to division leaders, Indy faces only one team with a winning record in its final five games. The most recent time the Colts played a team with a losing mark, Richardson rallied them past the New York Jets 28-27. But Colts coach Shane Steichen knows that's not the answer. The Colts must get this offense righted now. “We’ve got to get that figured out. We’ve got to get him going on the ground,” Steichen said when asked about Taylor, who has 92 yards on his past 35 carries. “We’ll look at the offensive line. We’ll look at everything." Pass rush. Pro Bowl DT DeForest Buckner's presence certainly has been felt since he returned from a sprained ankle Oct. 27. In those past five games, the Colts have had 14 sacks, including three of Jared Goff on Sunday. Penalties. The Colts have had one of the cleanest operations in the league most of this season. Sunday was an anomaly, but one that can't merely be written off. WR Michael Pittman Jr. The five-year veteran is one of the league's toughest guys, but playing through a back injury appeared to take its toll on Pittman's productivity. Since sitting out in Week 10, Pittman has 11 receptions for 142 yards including six for 96 yards, his second-highest total of the season, Sunday. Tight ends. Each week the Colts want their tight ends to make an impact. And each week, they seem to fail. It happened again Sunday when Drew Ogletree dropped a TD pass that would have given Indy a 10-7 lead. Instead, Indy settled for a field goal and a 7-6 deficit. Through 12 games, Indy's tight ends have a total of 26 catches, 299 yards and two TDs. That's just not good enough in a league where versatile, productive tight ends increasingly signal success. Pittman and WR Josh Downs both returned to the game after leaving briefly with shoulder injuries. WR Ashton Dulin did not return after hurting his foot in the second half. But the bigger questions come on the offensive line. LT Bernhard Raimann (knee) was inactive Sunday, and rookie center Tanor Bortolini entered the concussion protocol Monday. Bortolini was one of three rookie starters the past two weeks, replacing Pro Bowler Ryan Kelly who is on injured reserve. 55.88 — Indy has scored touchdowns on 55.88% of its red zone trips this season. While it puts it near the middle of the NFL, it's cost the Colts multiple wins. Richardson needs to rebound from this latest 11 of 28 performance and show he can lead the Colts to victories week after week. He'll get plenty of chances over the season's final month, starting with next week's game at the New England Patriots. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
Thanksgiving game against Packers will reveal a lot about Dolphins' chances
Meet the creator behind 'life-changing' autism app bridging the communication gapBy MICHAEL R. SISAK NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for Sean “Diddy” Combs tried for a third time Friday to persuade a judge to let him leave jail while he awaits his sex trafficking trial, but a decision won’t come until next week. Judge Arun Subramanian said at a hearing that he will release his decision on Combs’ latest request for bail after Combs’ lawyers and federal prosecutors file letters addressing outstanding issues. Those letters are due at noon on Monday, Subramanian said. Combs’ lawyers pitched having him await trial under around-the-clock surveillance either his mansion on an island near Miami Beach or — after the judge scoffed at that location — an apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Their plan essentially amounts to putting Combs on house arrest, with strict limits on who he has contact with. But prosecutors argue that Combs has routinely flouted jail rules and can’t be trusted not to interfere with witnesses or the judicial process. “The argument that he’s a lawless person who doesn’t follow instructions isn’t factually accurate,” Combs lawyer Anthony Ricco argued. “The idea that he’s an out-of-control individual who has to be detained isn’t factually accurate.” Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years with help from a network of associates and employees while silencing victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. His trial is slated to begin May 5. The Bad Boy Records founder remains locked up at a Brooklyn federal jail, where he spent his Nov. 4 birthday. Two other judges previously concluded that Combs would be a danger to the community if he is released and an appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals weighs his bail request. Friday’s hearing was the second time Combs was in court this week. On Tuesday, a judge blocked prosecutors from using as evidence papers that were seized from his cell during jail-wide sweep for contraband and weapons at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. As he entered through a side door, Combs waved to relatives including his mother and several of his children in the courtroom gallery, tapping his hand to his heart and blowing kisses at them. He then hugged his lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, before taking a seat at the defense table. He was not handcuffed or shackled and wore a beige jail uniform, occasionally pulling a pair of reading glasses from his pocket as he peered at papers in front of him. Prosecutors maintain that no bail conditions will mitigate the “risk of obstruction and dangerousness to others” of releasing Combs from jail. Prosecutors contend that while locked up the “I’ll Be Missing You” artist has orchestrated social media campaigns aimed at tainting the jury pool. They allege that he has also attempted to publicly leak materials he thinks would be helpful to his case and is contacting potential witnesses via third parties. “Simply put, the defendant cannot be trusted,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik argued. Combs’ lawyer Teny Geragos countered that, given the strict release conditions proposed, “it would be impossible for him not to follow rules.”
